Lalji LSE PfAL Scholarships 2014-2015 Sub-Saharan African Students in UK

Applications are ongoing for the 2015 Lalji LSE PfAL Scholarships for Sub-Saharan African Students in UK. The Lalji LSE PfAL scholarship programme is highly competitive and provides funding to enable bright young Africans to undertake a full-time Masters degree programme here at the School.

Generously supported by Firoz and Najma Lalji, the individual scholarships are worth up to GBP£30,000 with the final award dependent upon an assessment of financial need. Candidates for PfAL funding must be able to demonstrate academic ability, leadership potential, determination to succeed and a desire to effect change. Additionally, preference is given to candidates who have not previously studied outside of Africa.

Scholarship Value

A full scholarship will cover fees and living costs, but the value for each student will be assessed according to financial need. As well as studying for a prestigious London School of Economics MSc programme, all Lalji PfAL Scholarship recipients will benefit from an additional study seminar series plus automatic enrolment into the PfAL@LSE leadership program which takes place throughout the year.

Eligible Countries

Students of Sub-Saharan Africa – Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (DRC-Kinshasa), Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland , Tanzania , Togo, Uganda and Zambia can apply for these scholarships. However a minimum of 15 places will be reserved for applicants from Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda.

Eligibility

  • In 2015/16, the scholarships are open to applicants from across the whole of sub-Saharan Africa, however a minimum of 15 places will be reserved for applicants from Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda.
  • Applicants who have not previously studied outside Africa are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • In order to be considered for one of these awards, you must have a bachelor’s degree and meet the minimum entry requirements for LSE’S graduate programmes.   • If you meet the entry requirements, please complete a PfAL Phase 1 application form. If your initial application is approved then you are eligible to apply for one of the selected MSc programmes (Phase 2) and complete a financial assessment form.
  • Only Phase 1-approved candidates holding an offer of a place on one of the approved MSc programmes will be assessed for an award. Assessment for an award will be made by the LSE Financial Awards Panel and on the basis of financial need.

Application Procedure and Deadline

The application process is scheduled into three stages; the Pre-Application, MSc Application and Financial Application stages. Eligible applicants are advised to download the Pre-Application form (from the official link below the page) and would be open until the first of March 2015.
If your initial application is approved then you are eligible to apply for one of the selected MSc programmes (Phase 2) and complete a financial assessment form (Phase 3). The first 50 successful Phase 1 applicants will be granted a fee waiver worth GBP£50 when applying for graduate study.
Application Deadline is scheduled for 1st March 2015; All successful candidates will be notified of the outcome by email before 30th June 2015.

Key Responsibilities

Assisting all program staff to reconcile variances that occur in the application of cash and other spending in the course of implementing activities that are in line with the state work plans.
Reviewing staff time sheets on a weekly and monthly basis, ensuring timeliness, correctness, and compliance with policies and procedures of Abt Associates Nigeria.
Preparing balance sheet account reconciles, as directed by the FAM and with approval of the STL.
Providing support for annual audits, which may include research and reconcile.

Qualification

Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or other relevant field preferred
At least 2 years of professional accounting experience, preferably in a development work setting.
Proficient communication, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills.
Demonstrated self-management skills and ability to work with limited supervision.
Intermediate to advanced computer literacy, including experience in Microsoft word processing, spreadsheets and accounting software, with knowledge of QuickBooks software or other accounting platform, a plus.
Knowledge of standard contract terms, including hourly, lumps sum, not-to-exceed and how they are applied in the billing process.
Ability to work well with others under deadline situations and respond to changes in priorities.
